Crash Details
Local officials report that four people – three junior secondary school students and their motorcycle driver – were killed in a crash on Tuesday morning in Oluyole Local Government Area, Oyo State. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on the Abanla–Idi-Ayunre road as the students were heading to Prospect High School in Abanla. According to witnesses, a construction-company truck fatally struck the students’ motorcycle after attempting to overtake another vehicle. The rider and two of the students died instantly; a third student later succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The truck driver fled the scene immediately and was still at large as police launched an investigation.
Eyewitnesses said distraught students blocked the road with fallen branches shortly after the crash, demanding justice and urgent government intervention. Other commercial motorcyclists and local residents joined in solidarity, decrying the recurring danger posed by heavy trucks on that route.

Authorities’ Response
The Chairman of Oluyole Local Government, Asiwaju Akeem Olatunji, rushed to the scene alongside police and security personnel to calm protesters and address the crisis. He expressed deep sorrow at the loss of the students and condemned the recklessness of some heavy-truck drivers and motorcycle riders alike. Olatunji noted that had the motorcyclist obeyed traffic rules – including passenger limits – the crash might have been avoided.
Olatunji assured the victims’ families that “no stone [will be] left unturned” in apprehending the culprit and that justice would be served. He also vowed that the construction company owning the truck would compensate the bereaved families. Speaking emotionally, he said, “This is one tragedy too many… We cannot continue to lose our children to preventable road accidents”.
Planned Road Safety Measures
In the wake of the crash, Olatunji announced immediate safety measures to prevent similar accidents. He directed the construction of speed breakers on the Abanla–Idi-Ayunre road and ordered the clearing of roadside vegetation to improve visibility for motorists. He added that discussions were already underway with the truck company to enforce stricter safety protocols for its drivers and vehicles. Meanwhile, police have impounded the truck involved and pledged to investigate the incident fully, assuring the public that justice will be done.
