20 September 2025 - Residents of Ibadan were once again jolted by fear and anxiety on Saturday morning after a petrol-laden tanker overturned, spilling its highly flammable contents across a busy road in the Apata area of the city.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours, saw the tanker lose control and tip over near a residential and commercial zone, prompting immediate concern from passers-by and local traders. Witnesses described the moment as tense, with many scrambling to safety as the pungent smell of petrol filled the air.
“It was terrifying,” said one shop owner who had just opened for the day. “We saw the tanker wobble and then suddenly fall. People started shouting and running. Everyone feared it would explode.”
Fortunately, no lives were lost, and emergency responders arrived swiftly to contain the situation. The area was cordoned off to prevent ignition, and fire service personnel worked diligently to neutralise the risk. Local authorities also urged residents to stay away from the scene and avoid any activities that could trigger a fire.
This marks yet another in a string of similar incidents in Ibadan, raising concerns about the safety of fuel transportation across urban centres. Many have called for stricter regulations and improved vehicle maintenance to prevent future disasters.
