In a colourful ceremony, Bishop (Dr.) Mrs. Eyoanwan Bassey Edet Otu, wife of the Governor of Cross River State, officially inaugurated the Bishop (Dr.) Mrs. Eyoanwan Bassey Edet Otu Entrepreneurial Development Centre at the College of Nursing Sciences, Calabar.
The newly established centre is designed to be a hub of innovation, collaboration, and inspiration, equipping students, youth, women, and underprivileged groups with practical skills in areas such as fashion design, photography, and catering. Its overarching goal is to foster economic growth and broaden opportunities for empowerment.
Speaking at the event, the First Lady expressed her commitment to working with the centre to support vulnerable groups and create pathways to a brighter future. She encouraged students to take advantage of the centre’s facilities to turn their creative ideas into tangible outcomes.
Commending the initiative, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Elder (Dr.) Henry Egbe, described it as a step in line with the Governor’s vision of equipping young people with the skills and knowledge to drive innovation and economic development. He further noted that the centre meets the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) standards for student training.
The Provost of the College, Mrs. Joy Obeten, highlighted the centre as a landmark achievement in promoting entrepreneurship among students and the wider community. She extended her gratitude to the Governor for providing the resources needed to bring the project to life.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Christy Essien Ekpe, also lauded the First Lady for her dedication to empowering citizens and urged her to sustain her efforts.
In recognition of her commitment to social empowerment, the centre has been named in honour of the First Lady.
The commissioning was attended by a host of dignitaries, including the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Edema Erom; Dr. Mrs. Virginia Emmanuel Ironbar, wife of the Chief of Staff; wives of legislators; Director General of PHCDA, Dr. (Mrs.) Vivian Otu; Special Adviser on Nursing Education, Mrs. Spencer Efem; Special Assistant on Nursing, Mr. Coco-Bassey Esu; Director of Nursing Services, CRS, Mrs. Roseline Obojor Ogar; Chairman of NANNM, CRS, Comrade Josephine Bassey; as well as political appointees, staff, and management of the college.
The establishment of the entrepreneurial centre marks a significant milestone for the College of Nursing Sciences, Calabar, ushering in a new era of innovation and skills development expected to transform the lives of students and the surrounding community.
