FG Disburses ₦2.3bn to Clear Lecturers’ Arrears, Announces Education Sector Reforms

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

The federal government has announced the disbursement of ₦2.3 billion to settle salary and promotion arrears owed to university lecturers. Alongside the release of these funds, officials affirmed a commitment to implement structural reforms within the education sector.

Details indicate that the allocation is intended to address accumulated back payments for both wages and promotional increments. While precise timelines for full payment remain unspecified, the government’s move signals priority for resolving outstanding obligations to academic staff.

In making the announcement, the authority emphasised that the disbursement is part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability, transparency, and efficiency in the management of educational institutions. As part of the reform pledge, there is an expectation for review of existing systems governing lecturer compensation, promotion criteria, and operational procedures within the university system.

Stakeholders in the higher education sector have responded cautiously, welcoming the financial gesture but calling for clarity on how the promised reforms will be enforced. Many stress that sustainable improvements will require consistent funding, oversight mechanisms, and structural adjustments beyond one-off payments.

The government has positioned this action as both restitution and a catalyst for change, asserting that resolving arrears is an essential step, but not the end of the process toward broader institutional reform.
