Chelsea Football Club has confirmed that head coach Enzo Maresca has left his position after an 18-month spell in charge at Stamford Bridge.
In a brief statement released on Thursday, the Premier League side said that both the club and Maresca had agreed to “part company” as they look to reinvigorate their season with a fresh managerial direction.
Maresca’s departure comes amid a challenging run of form for the Blues, who sit fifth in the league, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal following just one win in their last seven top-flight matches.
Chelsea’s statement acknowledged the Italian coach’s contributions, highlighting the success he achieved during his tenure, including Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup triumphs, as well as guiding the club back into Champions League qualification last season.
“As key objectives remain across four competitions, including securing a place in the Champions League, it was agreed that a change would give the team its best chance of getting the season back on track,” the club said.
Maresca’s final match in charge was a 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday. He did not attend the subsequent press conference, with the club attributing his absence to illness amid reports of a strained relationship with the club’s hierarchy.
Originally appointed in June 2024 as Mauricio Pochettino’s successor, Maresca had signed a long-term contract extending to 2029, with an option for a further year, underlining the club’s initial faith in his vision.
Chelsea now face a managerial search with important fixtures ahead, starting with a Premier League clash against Manchester City this weekend. Early names linked to the vacancy include Liam Rosenior, head coach of French club Strasbourg — also owned by Chelsea’s parent company, BlueCo — among other potential candidates.
The club concluded its announcement by thanking Maresca for his efforts and wishing him well for the future.
