Appeal Court Upholds Suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Abuja, Nigeria - The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, ruling that the Nigerian Senate acted within its constitutional authority in disciplining the Kogi Central lawmaker.

In a unanimous judgment on Monday, a three-member panel of appellate justices held that the upper chamber did not violate Akpoti-Uduaghan’s parliamentary privileges or constitutional rights when it imposed the suspension.

The decision stemmed from an appeal filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan challenging the legality of her suspension. The court, however, found no merit in the argument that her rights were breached by the disciplinary action taken by the Senate.

While upholding the suspension, the appellate court set aside related contempt proceedings and the ₦5 million fine previously awarded against the senator in connection with her conduct towards the Senate leadership.

The ruling marks a significant development in the ongoing legal dispute surrounding the lawmaker’s status in the National Assembly.
