Calabar, Nigeria - Magistrates in Cross River State have resumed an industrial action over unresolved demands related to working conditions and welfare provisions, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has confirmed.
The affected magistrates halted court proceedings earlier this week in protest, citing what they described as persistent neglect of their welfare concerns by the state government. Their grievances include calls for improved working facilities and fulfilment of promises previously made by authorities.
Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved judicial officers, a union representative said the resumption of the strike followed continued frustration over unmet demands that had been raised in earlier engagements with government officials.
The industrial action has led to the temporary closure of magistrate courts across the state, disrupting the dispensation of justice at that level and delaying the hearing of numerous cases.
Efforts by stakeholders to secure a swift resolution and reopen dialogue between the state government and the magistrates remained ongoing at the time of reporting.
