Nigeria and Cameroon have signed a bilateral agreement aimed at strengthening measures to enhance aviation safety and security between the two countries.

The accord, concluded during a meeting in Abuja between the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and his Cameroonian counterpart, Paul Atanga Nji, is designed to foster deeper collaboration on air transport regulation, safe flight operations and shared oversight of airspace.

Speaking after the signing, Minister Keyamo said the pact reflects a shared commitment to improve standards and protect civilian lives by ensuring the highest possible safety protocols are upheld in both nations’ skies.

The agreement requires both countries to cooperate more closely on air accident prevention, information sharing, enforcement of international aviation standards and joint training for personnel in areas such as air traffic management, aircraft maintenance oversight and emergency response.

Keyamo noted that the aviation sector plays a critical role in economic growth and regional connectivity, stressing that safety is “non-negotiable” as air travel continues to expand across West and Central Africa.

The Cameroonian minister, for his part, said the deal marks a positive step forward in bilateral relations and called on stakeholders in both countries to prioritise the prompt implementation of agreed actions.

“This collaboration will strengthen confidence in air transport among passengers and investors alike,” Atanga Nji added.

Officials from both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to aligning the pact with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and ensuring frequent reviews of progress to address emerging challenges in the aviation sector.

The partnership is expected to create a safer airspace for travellers and support wider regional efforts to improve aviation infrastructure and regulatory compliance.
