US Sanctions Mexican Resort Linked to CJNG Timeshare Fraud

By Oluchi Omai

The United States has imposed sanctions on Kovay Gardens, a timeshare resort in Mexico, over its alleged links to fraud schemes connected to the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).

The move also targets five Mexican nationals and 17 companies said to be involved in timeshare fraud operations orchestrated by the cartel.

According to the announcement, CJNG was designated last year by the administration of Donald Trump as both a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group. The cartel is accused of generating illicit income through activities such as drug trafficking, fuel theft, extortion, human trafficking, and fraudulent timeshare schemes.

Officials say CJNG has also contributed to the trafficking of illicit fentanyl into the United States, further heightening risks to American citizens.

The latest sanctions were imposed under Executive Order 14059, which addresses the spread of illicit drugs and their production networks, as well as Executive Order 13224, which targets terrorist groups and their supporters.

Authorities say the action underscores Washington’s continued commitment to safeguarding Americans from organisations designated as terrorist threats.
