BMW’s Chinese division has launched an immediate recall of approximately 180,000 vehicles following the discovery of a critical wiring defect that could lead to engine compartment fires. The announcement, made Tuesday by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), highlights a specific vulnerability in the air conditioning systems of several popular luxury models.
Scope of the Recall
The safety action is divided between locally produced units and high-end imports, covering a production window spanning nearly three years:
Domestically Manufactured Models (133,849 units): This group consists of BMW 5 Series vehicles produced in China between December 5, 2023, and April 12, 2025.
Imported Models (45,678 units): The recall also impacts a range of premium imports, including the 5 Series, 7 Series, and high-performance M5 models manufactured between June 2022 and April 2025.
The Technical Defect
According to the SAMR, the primary hazard stems from the "improper wiring" of the air conditioning harness located in the front cabin. The regulator noted that the layout of these wires makes them susceptible to damage during routine maintenance, specifically when technicians replace the vehicle’s air filters in the aftermarket.
If the wiring harness is compromised during these service intervals, it can lead to a short circuit. In the most severe instances, this electrical failure poses a direct risk of fire.
BMW’s Remedial Action
To mitigate the danger, BMW has committed to a comprehensive inspection of all affected vehicles. Authorized technicians will examine the air conditioning wiring harnesses and resecure them to ensure they are no longer at risk of damage.
This safety service will be provided to all impacted car owners free of charge. The recall is effective immediately as part of the automaker's effort to address the localized fire risk before further incidents occur.
