The Confederation of African Football has appointed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its Acting Secretary-General, marking a historic milestone for Nigeria in continental football leadership.
The appointment was ratified on Sunday during a CAF Congress held in Cairo, following the resignation of outgoing Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down from the role the same day.
Adamu’s emergence makes him the first Nigerian to occupy the position since CAF was founded more than seven decades ago, ending a long-standing absence of Nigerian representation at the organisation’s top administrative level.
Before his elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in organising major competitions across the continent. His nomination was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently approved by the Congress.
The Secretary-General position is regarded as one of the most influential roles within CAF, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organisation, managing legal and administrative affairs, and implementing decisions of the executive committee.
Adamu’s appointment comes at a time of transition within CAF, with officials expressing confidence that his experience and institutional knowledge will ensure continuity and stability in the administration of African football.
