The operation, carried out by soldiers of the 6 Brigade under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke, took place along the Wukari–Ikyaior Road during a routine stop-and-search exercise on Thursday.
Arrest During Routine Patrol
According to military authorities, the suspects were intercepted while travelling on a motorcycle. A search conducted by the troops led to the discovery of 444 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, raising concerns about the intended use of the weapons.
The suspects were identified as Wisdom Soomga, 32, from Benue State, and Elisha Danladi, 38, from Taraba State.
In addition to the ammunition, security operatives recovered cash, mobile phones, ATM cards, charms, and the motorcycle used for transportation.
Investigation Underway
Military officials confirmed that the suspects and recovered items are currently in custody, with investigations ongoing to determine the source of the ammunition and its intended destination.
Security analysts say such recoveries are critical in disrupting arms supply chains often linked to banditry, communal clashes, and organised criminal networks across parts of northern Nigeria.
Army Reaffirms Commitment to Security
The Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended the troops for their vigilance and swift response.
He emphasised that the operation aligns with directives from the Chief of Army Staff to intensify efforts in tackling criminal activities and restoring stability in the region.
The commander also reassured residents of the Army’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging the public to support security agencies with timely and credible intelligence.
Growing Security Concerns
Taraba State has, in recent years, experienced intermittent security challenges, including arms trafficking and inter-communal violence. The latest arrest highlights ongoing efforts by the military to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons in the region.
Looking Ahead
While the arrests mark a tactical success for security forces, authorities stress that sustained collaboration between communities and law enforcement remains crucial in preventing further threats.
As investigations continue, attention will be focused on uncovering wider networks that may be involved in the movement of arms across the region.
