A harrowing incident in Oyo State has left a family devastated after a 30-year-old man allegedly murdered his older brother on the belief that he had been shot in a dream.
According to police sources, the suspect, Adewale Akinola, reportedly stabbed his elder sibling, Oluwaseun Akinola (34), to death at their home in Apete a residential district of Oyo town following a confrontation triggered by the dream. The motive, as described by local residents and confirmed by security operatives, stemmed from a belief that the deceased had caused the attack in the dream world.
The tragic event occurred late on Tuesday when Adewale allegedly accused his brother of harming him in a dream and subsequently stabbed him with a knife. Oluwaseun was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders who were called in by neighbours.
Police spokesperson SP Adewale Aderibigbe said the suspect was taken into custody immediately after the killing and is currently being detained while the investigation continues. “The motive behind the murder is bizarre and deeply troubling,” Aderibigbe said. “We are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.”
According to neighbours, the brothers had lived together peacefully until the disagreement that culminated in the fatal attack. “It was shocking,” said one resident who witnessed police activity at the home. “They appeared to be like any other siblings; we never expected something like this.”
Legal experts say the case highlights complex issues involving mental health and family conflict, noting that cultural responses to dreams and spiritual experiences can sometimes influence behaviour in disturbing ways. “Isolated incidents rooted in misguided beliefs can have tragic consequences,” commented social psychologist Dr Folashade Ajetunmobi. “This event underscores the need for better community awareness about mental well-being and conflict resolution.”
The Office of the State Commissioner of Police has urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their duties. Meanwhile, authorities have pledged to involve mental health professionals as part of the ongoing probe, acknowledging that the nature of the suspect’s alleged motivation requires careful expert assessment.
