Google Says AI Helped Block Billions of Harmful Ads

 


Google has revealed that artificial intelligence played a major role in stopping billions of harmful advertisements from reaching users, highlighting the growing importance of AI in tackling online scams and fraud.


According to the company, its advanced AI systems were able to block or remove more than 8.3 billion ads, including hundreds of millions linked to scams, as part of ongoing efforts to improve online safety.


The tech giant said AI tools were instrumental in identifying and intercepting policy-violating content at scale, with over 99 per cent of problematic ads detected before they were seen by users.


AI Strengthens Fight Against Scams

Google noted that the rise of generative AI has made online scams more sophisticated, enabling bad actors to create more convincing fraudulent content. However, the same technology is now being deployed to counter these threats.


Its AI systems, including the Gemini model, have improved the speed and accuracy of detecting suspicious behaviour, such as fake business identities and coordinated scam campaigns.


The company also disclosed that millions of advertiser accounts were suspended as part of its enforcement actions, reflecting a broader push to clean up its advertising ecosystem.


Balancing Growth and Safety

Despite the increasing complexity of online threats, Google said AI has significantly enhanced its ability to respond proactively rather than reactively. The system has also reduced incorrect ad suspensions, improving overall efficiency.


Industry analysts suggest that the future of digital advertising will likely involve AI systems competing against each other, as platforms work to stay ahead of evolving fraud tactics.


The development comes at a time when AI is becoming more deeply integrated into online advertising, with companies exploring new ways to deliver targeted promotions while maintaining user trust.
