Tinubu Approves 5,000 CCTV Cameras to Bolster Security Following Plateau Massacre

President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate deployment of 5,000 units of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras as part of urgent measures to curb the rising spate of insecurity across the country, specifically in response to the recent tragic killings in Plateau State.

The directive was announced by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, during a high-level strategic meeting with senior police officers in Abuja. The move aims to enhance surveillance capabilities and intelligence gathering to prevent a recurrence of the coordinated attacks that claimed numerous lives in Plateau communities.

According to the Police Chief, the President's approval underscores the administration's zero-tolerance policy for violence and its commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians. The 5,000 digital cameras are expected to be installed in strategic locations, starting with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) before extending to other volatile regions.

"The President has graciously approved the procurement and installation of 5,000 digital CCTV cameras to aid the police in monitoring activities and responding swiftly to criminal elements," the IGP stated. He noted that the technology would serve as a force multiplier for the Nigeria Police Force, bridging the gap created by manpower shortages.

The announcement comes amidst national outrage and mourning following the brutal attacks on villages in the Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State. The incidents had drawn widespread condemnation, with citizens calling for decisive action from the federal government.

In addition to the installation of the surveillance equipment, the Police high command has reiterated its commitment to increasing visibility in troubled areas. The deployment of the CCTV cameras is anticipated to assist in the identification and prosecution of perpetrators, thereby serving as a deterrent to future attacks.

Further details regarding the timeline for the full installation and the specific technical specifications of the surveillance equipment are expected to be released by the Force Headquarters in the coming days.
