Operatives of the International Federation of Women Lawyers have rescued a baby who was allegedly abandoned at a shrine in Rivers State, bringing the child to safety and triggering efforts to identify the mother and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The infant was reportedly discovered by residents near the shrine before the matter was brought to the attention of FIDA, which intervened and took custody of the child. The organisation described the rescue as a humanitarian response aimed at protecting the life and welfare of the baby.
FIDA officials said the child has since been taken to a medical facility for proper examination and care, while arrangements are being made to ensure the infant receives temporary protection pending further investigations.
According to the organisation, the case has been reported to relevant authorities, including social welfare agencies and security operatives, as efforts continue to trace the mother and determine why the baby was abandoned.
Representatives of FIDA expressed concern over the growing number of cases involving abandoned children and called for greater public awareness on available support services for women facing difficult pregnancies, economic hardship, or family challenges.
The group also urged community leaders, religious institutions, and government agencies to strengthen child-protection mechanisms and encourage individuals in distress to seek help rather than resort to abandoning infants.
Residents of the area were said to have commended the swift intervention by FIDA, noting that the timely rescue may have saved the child from serious harm.
FIDA reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of women and children and said it would continue to work with government agencies to ensure the baby receives adequate care and that those responsible are identified in accordance with the law.
The rescued infant remains under care as investigations continue.
