The Cross River State Government has ordered a full review of safety measures at the Obudu Cattle Ranch following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of four seminarians and left nine others injured.

This was announced in a statement on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nsa Gill, who said the review will focus on transport safety within and around the ranch.

The accident occurred on Saturday near the Ikwette community at the base of the Obudu Ranch Resort hill. A vehicle carrying 13 seminarians from the Enugu Catholic Diocese reportedly lost its brakes while descending from the hill after a guided tour led by a Reverend Father, resulting in a fatal crash just outside the resort.

While expressing deep condolences to the families of the deceased, the government promised to investigate the cause of the crash and ensure steps are taken to prevent a repeat.

“A thorough review of safety procedures is ongoing, especially regarding transport within the area,” the statement read. “We urge all visitors to make safety a priority by checking their vehicles and following all safety guidelines when visiting our tourist sites.”

The government also assured that support will be provided to the affected families and that updates will be shared as investigations continue.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time,” Gill said, adding that efforts are being made to contact the families to offer help.

The statement noted that the Nigerian Army personnel stationed at the ranch were among the first responders, helping to rescue the injured and recover the bodies. The injured are currently receiving medical care.

The government asked the public to respect the privacy of the victims’ families as they mourn.
