The Federal Government has issued a travel safety warning urging Nigerians residing in or planning to travel to Iran and Gulf countries to exercise increased vigilance amid evolving security concerns.
In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised travellers to be cautious and remain alert to local conditions, underscoring the need to monitor developments and avoid areas where tensions are more likely to flare.
The advisory highlights that Nigerians in these regions should stay informed about diplomatic and security updates, maintain regular contact with local authorities and always have emergency contact information readily available.
The ministry also encouraged citizens overseas to register with Nigerian diplomatic missions, so they can be reached promptly with important advisories or in situations where consular assistance might be necessary.
“The safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad remain a priority for the Federal Government,” the statement read. It added that travellers are expected to exercise personal responsibility and follow local laws and regulations during their stay.
While the warning did not specify particular incidents prompting the alert, it comes amid rising geopolitical tensions and periodic security incidents in parts of the Middle East that have affected regional stability.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protect its citizens abroad and urged Nigerians to take necessary precautions, including keeping families at home informed of their whereabouts and planned movements.
Nigerians requiring consular support or further information were directed to contact the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate.
