Judge Withdraws from Malami’s ₦213bn Forfeiture Case

Abuja, Nigeria - A Federal High Court judge has withdrawn from presiding over the ₦213 billion forfeiture suit brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Justice Donatus Okorowo recused himself from the high-stakes case on Tuesday, citing the need to ensure fairness and avoid any perception of bias in proceedings. The judge did not elaborate publicly on specific reasons behind his decision to step aside.

The forfeiture suit, instituted by the anti-graft agency, seeks the forfeiture of funds and assets alleged to be proceeds of unlawful activity linked to Malami. The case has drawn significant public and legal attention due to the profile of the defendant and the substantial sum involved.

Following the recusal, court proceedings were adjourned. A fresh date for the resumption of the matter is expected to be scheduled by the court registry.

Neither the EFCC nor counsel to Malami has issued immediate comment on the judge’s decision or its potential impact on the timeline of the case.
