The Cross River State Police Command has responded to a viral social media report alleging an armed attack on female guests at a hotel in Calabar South, describing the claims as exaggerated and misleading.

In an official statement released on 4 October 2025, the Command clarified that the incident occurred on 3 October at approximately 10:19 a.m. at a guest house located in the Ambo/Mbukpa axis. According to the hotel owner, two armed men scaled the fence and broke into a room occupied by a man and his wife. The suspects reportedly stole two mobile phones and a power bank before fleeing the scene.

Following a prompt response from the Divisional Police Officer of Efut Division, the premises were searched. During the operation, one Emmanuel Ekpo, aged 25, was found within the compound and failed to provide a credible reason for his presence. He attempted to escape but was apprehended by officers. Upon searching him, the police recovered two wraps of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp. Ekpo is currently assisting with ongoing investigations.

Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, PSC, MNIPS, urged the public to disregard the sensationalised version of the event circulating online. He appealed to social media users and content creators to verify crime-related information with official police sources before publication, stressing that inaccurate reports could harm the state’s reputation among tourists and investors.

CP Afegbua reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Command and other security agencies to maintaining peace and safety across Cross River State, which he described as one of the most secure regions in the country.

The Command continues to investigate the incident and has assured residents of its dedication to upholding law and order.
